What is The Bowen Technique?

Bowen is a very distinctive treatment, that uses the thumbs and fingers of the therapist in precise locations on the body, in a rolling type motion, which is the 'Bowen move'. The therapist will then leave the client alone for a few minutes. The purpose of these breaks is to allow time for the body to begin its response to the moves that have been made. There are also breaks between session of Bowen, to enable the body to continue to make change at its own pace.

How does Bowen Work?

The neural connections in our brain enable us to respond to new information and to make change in the body, so as your therapist applies the move, signals are being sent to and from the brain, and in the case of Bowen the body/minds response to the stimulus created by your therapist, is to ask for more information, on this new input/information. The first response is nearly always deep relaxation. Clients also often report a feeling of warmth or tingling, and a also feelings of  'your hands are still there,' on the area that the move was just made on.

How Many Sessions?

The session will last about one hour, usually a series of 3 to 4 sessions are required, with a minimum of 5 to 10 days between treatments.

Regular Sessions?

Once your initial issue is on the mend, you can choose to continue your Bowen. Having a session once a month or every 6 to 8 weeks, as a way to keep yourself in good condition, to address any potential issues before they become painful or restrictive, to de-stress, to manage long standing conditions such as arthritis, or just to re-align and relax, to de-stress and bring the body/mind back into dynamic balance.
